The London Assay Office is the oldest hallmarking authority in the world, with its origins dating back to 1300, when King Edward I introduced compulsory testing of precious metals to protect buyers. Its famous leopard's head town mark has become one of the most recognisable symbols in British jewellery, while the very term hallmark comes from Goldsmiths' Hall, where precious metals have been officially tested for centuries.
