The Sheffield Assay Office was founded in 1773 alongside Birmingham, allowing local silversmiths to hallmark their work without sending it to London. Sheffield originally used a crown as its town mark before adopting the elegant White Rose of Yorkshire in 1975, celebrating the city's Yorkshire heritage. Renowned for its silverware and cutlery, Sheffield also produced beautiful jewellery, making its hallmarks highly sought after by collectors of British silver and gold.
