A unique statement pendant set with black onyx and lapis lazuli, combining strong geometric lines with sweeping wing-like silver details.
At the centre is a long polished panel of black onyx and above sits an oval cabochon of lapis lazuli. The pendant is particularly distinctive for the pair of sculpted wing-like motifs that sweep outwards from the centre. Together with the linear construction, silver bead details and strong symmetry, they give the piece a beautiful Art Deco and Egyptian Revival character.
Egyptian Revival jewellery became particularly fashionable during the early 20th century, especially following the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, when Egyptian-inspired forms, colours and motifs became enormously influential in Western decorative arts. While this piece is not from that period, its combination of deep blue lapis, black onyx, geometric silverwork and wing-like forms strongly recalls that aesthetic.
The stones also have long histories of their own. Lapis lazuli has been treasured since antiquity and was particularly prized in ancient Egypt, where its intense blue colour was associated with the heavens and divine power. Onyx has traditionally been associated with protection, strength and grounding.
