A beautiful vintage sterling silver locket by Excalibur Jewellery Ltd, fully hallmarked for Birmingham in 1977 and decorated with an engraved fern motif.
The circular locket features a stylised fern frond sweeping across the front, framed by a finely engraved border. Opening at the side reveals a vivid red-lined interior, with space for two photographs or other tiny keepsakes.
Ferns have acquired rich symbolism over time and are often associated with resilience, renewal and new beginnings. They also have a particularly interesting place in British decorative history: during the Victorian period, an enthusiasm for collecting and depicting ferns became known as pteridomania, with fern motifs appearing across jewellery, ceramics, textiles and other decorative arts.
