A sterling silver pendant depicting the ‘three wise monkeys’ motif, shown seated side by side in high relief.

Each figure is rendered in a compact, sculptural form: one covering the eyes, one the ears, and one the mouth. The ‘three wise monkeys’ motif is most closely associated with Japanese visual culture, where it became a widely recognised representation of the maxim ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’. The design is widely used today as a symbolic and recognisable form, often associated with ideas of restraint, awareness, and ethical conduct.

The pendant is stamped FOREIGN and 925 on the hanging loop, indicating that it was made overseas for import into the country of sale. It also carries the maker’s mark ‘A*D’, identifying it as the work of Andreas Daub, the long-established German jewellery manufacturer founded in Pforzheim in 1872. Known for producing high-quality sterling silver jewellery and charms, the company became particularly recognised during the twentieth century for its finely modelled figural designs.
